Chat
Chat is for internal team communication. It supports public channels, direct messages, message threads, unread counts, search, presence, typing indicators, and desktop notifications when the desktop app is available.
Channels and direct messages
Section titled “Channels and direct messages”Use channels for shared team conversations. Use direct messages when the conversation only involves one person or a small group.
Good channel names are short and predictable:

Threads
Section titled “Threads”Use threads when a reply belongs to one message and should not interrupt the main channel. Threads are useful for side discussions, clarifying a decision, or keeping status updates grouped.
Search
Section titled “Search”Chat search can help you find:
- channels
- people
- recent searches
- matching messages
Use specific terms when searching for old decisions or customer references.
Notifications
Section titled “Notifications”Unread counts appear in the sidebar. In the desktop app, Chat can also update the app badge and show native notifications.
Notification behavior may depend on channel membership, mute settings, and mention settings.
